*An Inconvenient Truth
Davis Guggenheim
Title: *An Inconvenient Truth
Studio: Lawrence Bender Productions
Genre: Documentary
Duration: 96 mins
Awards: Won 2 Oscars. Another 21 wins & 5 nominations
Starring: Al Gore, Billy West
Summary: Director Davis Guggenheim eloquently weaves the science of global warming with Mr. Gore's personal history and lifelong commitment to reversing the effects of global climate change.  A longtime advocate for the environment, Gore presents a wide array of facts and information in a thoughtful and compelling way.  "Al Gore strips his presentations of politics, laying out the facts for the audience to draw their own conclusions in a charming, funny and engaging style, and by the end has everyone on the edge of their seats, gripped by his haunting message," said Guggenheim.  An Inconvenient Truth is not a story of despair but rather a rallying cry to protect the one earth we all share.  "It is now clear that we face a deepening global climate crisis that requires us to act boldly, quickly, and wisely," said Gore.

Summary: First off, if you don't speak spanish, this DVD is not for you. You wouldn't understand a single joke anyway. I'd suggest checking Carlos Mencia which is as close as you could get to this guy, in english. (And that's a compliment. Both to Mencia and Lopez, which are both geniuses) That being said, you can stop reading right here because the rest of the review, will be in spanish.

Master of his craft, in his prime. Brilliant.

*Baby Einstein - Baby Bach - Musical Adventure
Title: *Baby Einstein - Baby Bach - Musical Adventure
Studio: WALT DISNEY VIDEO
Genre: Animation
Duration: 172 mins
Summary: Designed for infants and toddlers (1 to 36 months), "Baby Bach" is a nicely produced video that features recognizable, familiar toys and colorful objects, moving to the complexly beautiful music of Johann Sebastian Bach. According to the video producers, "Bach's music has shown to enhance creativity, improve academic achievement, reduce anxiety and heighten mental awareness." Any parent will embrace this theory. Not only did this video completely captivate a 22-month-old for its entire 30-minute run-time, but it's easy on the parents, too. The images are lively, clean, and sharp, and producers The Baby Einstein Company have a firm handle on what interests babies and toddlers. The extraneous segments with two pretty little blonde girls is silly, but forgivable. Given that most children elect to watch a video repeatedly, this is one that parents won't mind in the slightest. The music, available on CD, is simply lovely. "--N.F. Mendoza"

Title: *Baby Einstein - Baby Da Vinci - From Head to Toe
Studio: WALT DISNEY VIDEO
Genre: Animation
Duration: 33 mins
Starring: Baby Einstein
Summary: Expressive faces and the exploration of arms, legs, and other body parts simply fascinate babies and toddlers. "From Head to Toe" focuses in on eyes, ears, hands, and other appendages with rapidly changing, close-up photography of real-life children alternating with puppetry, toys, animals, and sculptures and paintings by famous artists. Accompanying the vivid images are whimsical versions of classical pieces by famous composers like Bach, Handel, and Corelli, made kid-friendly by the "Music Box Orchestra," as well as the traditional "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes." "Baby Einstein" videos are famous for this tried-and-true format that appeals to the limited attention span of very young viewers while encouraging cognitive development--the visual mix and pace in this presentation are especially effective. DVD features include language tracks in English, Spanish, and French; pictorial discovery cards with written and spoken words; an exploration of the five senses; puppet segments excerpted from the show; a read-aloud version of the book "Mimi's Toes"; and a listing of featured toys. (Ages 9 to 36 months) "--Tami Horiuchi"

Title: *Baby Einstein - Baby MacDonald - A Day on the Farm
Studio: WALT DISNEY VIDEO
Genre: Animation
Duration: 30 mins
Starring: Baby Einstein
Summary: The beauty of this entry in the Baby Einstein catalog is its integration of puppets, toys, and live farm footage to help babies and toddlers make the connection between their plastic play sets and stuffed animals with images of a real farm. As always, the spoken language is minimal, omitting the pesky verbs and adjectives that would confuse the very young. The 30-minute main program is divided into sections: barns and equipment, animals, planting crops, and harvesting. Background music ranges from "Old MacDonald" to Schumann, and DVD extras include a 6-minute puppet show and visual "discovery cards" identifying animals and farm paraphernalia with a single word. (Ages 6 months to 3 years) "--Kimberly Heinrichs"
*Baby Einstein - Baby Mozart - Music Festival
Title: *Baby Einstein - Baby Mozart - Music Festival
Studio: WALT DISNEY VIDEO
Genre: Educational
Duration: 170 mins
Summary: It's called "the Mozart Effect," the notion that exposing youngsters to the melodies of the maestro can improve verbal ability, spatial intelligence, creativity, and memory. It's a pretty big leap of faith to understand that effect unless you personally see a toddler react to the stimulation. The Baby Einstein folks have a series of tapes ("Baby Einstein", "Baby Bach") that add visual stimulation to the bouncy recordings (using vibraphone, Rhodes electric piano, and even a glockenspiel). The melodies are heard against colorful imagery of spinning tops, wave machines, soft baby toys, mobiles, and the like. Several parenting groups and magazines have heralded the tapes for children 1 to 36 months, but the Orwellian aspect of introducing babes in arms to the TV screen may cause many to just pick up the CD. *Baby Einstein - Neighborhood Animals
Title: *Baby Einstein - Neighborhood Animals
Studio: WALT DISNEY VIDEO
Genre: Educational
Duration: 66 mins
Summary: When Baby Einstein started its "video board books" in 1997, the company was virtually alone in the field of baby development. By its sixth video, the field has become crowded with similar-sounding titles. Now scientists might be able to analyze what a baby will get out of a video like "Baby Dolittle" compared to "Baby Van Gogh", but is it worth getting more baby videos? Absolutely--babies love variety as much as their adult counterparts. On that level, "Baby Dolittle" scores. The theme of animals is a natural, and this show should cause squeals of delight from little ones 1 to 4 years old. Using a stimulating mix of brightly colored toys, whimsical puppets (including your host, Pavlov the Dog), and lots of pictures, "Baby Dolittle" takes the viewer on a 30-minute tour of commonly found animals. Help your little pal spot a pig on the farm or a dog in the house. "Baby Dolittle" uses animals' sounds, kids' drawings, and photography for each animal in four habitats. The natural settings and original, bright recordings of Beethoven, Rimsky-Korsakov, Vivaldi, and others should make this a favorite every time you want to visit Old MacDonald's Farm. Followed by a companion production, "Baby Dolittle World Animals". "--Doug Thomas"

Duration: 90 mins
Starring: Ubaldo Aquiles De Lio, Aníbal Arias, Ernesto Baffa, Emilio Balcarce, Oscar Berlingieri

Title: *Carmen Electra's Aerobic Striptease Collection
Studio: Paramount
Genre: Fitness
Writer: Jessica Chaffin
Duration: 230 mins
Starring: Carmen Electra, Michael Carson, Stacey Harper, Ashley Roberts
Summary: While Volume One in "Carmen Electra's Aerobic Striptease" series featured Electra working out in front of a bed, "Vegas Strip" offers a more public venue, Studio 54, as her instructional setting. Since this segment is filmed at a legendary dance club, it makes sense that this workout session is constructed of choreographed dance moves, that one can either use on the dance floor or keep under wraps at home. "Vegas Strip's" half-hour session will provide good cardiovascular exercise, depending on what one puts into it, though it mostly improves grace and coordination, in easy-to-learn segments set to pulsating dance music. This is equally valuable since the premise of this series is to feel sexy and have fun while working out. Though it does appear to be more of a lesson in choreography, "Vegas Strip" clearly demonstrates the challenge implicit to such sexed-up dance moves, and may give those who shun dirty dancing a respect for the real professionals. —"Trinie Dalton"

Title: *IMAX Blue Planet
Studio: Imax
Genre: Documentary
Writer: Toni Myers
Duration: 42 mins
Starring: James Buchli, Toni Myers
Summary: The IMAX film "Blue Planet" offers an eloquent reminder--and a cautionary warning--that the planet Earth is a delicate living organism, constantly reshaped and rejuvenated by the awesome forces of nature. The film targets a grade-school audience but will prove informative to anyone fascinated by our home planet's evolution. Hurricanes, glaciers, volcanoes, thunderstorms, asteroid impacts, undersea furnace vents, and earthquakes are all explored as a system of interconnected forces that ensure the planet's survival. The difference between this and other nature films is that the Earth's delicacy is emphasized by stunning views from space, filmed in the IMAX format by NASA astronauts in orbit 200 miles above the Earth's surface. With astonishing clarity, this orbital perspective supports the film's ultimate purpose: to reveal the awesome beauty of the Earth, and to emphasize that we, the custodians of this miraculous gift, are also the greatest threat to the planet's delicate health. Proof of man's destructive influence offers a sobering reminder that our responsibility toward nature is perpetual, essential, and routinely abused.
"Blue Planet" combines state-of-the-art sound and image, principally directed by Ben Burtt, the Oscar-winning sound designer whose credits include the original "Star Wars" trilogy. No home-theater system could do full justice to the film's technical achievement, but the sights and sounds of "Blue Planet" are awesome nonetheless, and it's impossible to overstate the importance of the film's message and its hopeful emphasis on the potentially wondrous future of our one and only home. Title: *Inside Deep Throat
Studio: Imagine Entertainment
Genre: Documentary, History
Writer: Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato
Duration: 92
Awards: 1 win
Starring: Harry Reems, Linda Lovelace, Dennis Hopper, Peter Bart, Warren Beatty
Summary: In 1972, a seemingly typical shoestring budget pornographic film was made in a Florida hotel, "Deep Throat," starring Linda Lovelace. This film would surpass the wildest expectation of everyone involved to become one of the most successful independent films of all time. It caught the public imagination which met the spirit of the times, even as the self appointed guardians of public morality struggled to suppress it, and created, for a brief moment, a possible future where sexuality in film had a bold artistic potential. This film covers the story of the making of this controversial film, its stunning success, its hysterical opposition along with its dark side of mob influence and allegations of the on set mistreatment of the film's star. In short, the combined events would redefine the popular appeal of pornography, even as more cynical developments would lead it down other paths.

Summary: Some critics see the success of "Jackass: The Movie" as the last nail in the coffin of civilization, and they're probably right. This compilation of pain-inflicting stunts and embarrassing pranks has no artistic merit whatsoever--which doesn't keep it from being freakishly entertaining. Among other things, Johnny Knoxville and his posse get beaten up by a female kick-boxing champion; shoot bottle rockets out of their rectums; run amok in Japan wearing giant panda bear costumes; swim with whale sharks while holding pounds of brine shrimp in their swimsuits; and get done up in realistic old-age makeup so that they can race each other in motorized wheelchairs, among other goofs. It's a weird mixture of machismo and masochism, adolescent recklessness and frat boy homoeroticism, and someday someone will write a doctoral thesis about how "Jackass" relates to our safety-obsessed society. In the meantime, just enjoy. "--Bret Fetzer"

Summary: This has got to be one of the best boxed sets ever! I can't wait to get it! I didn't buy the first boxed set, which contained Jurassic Park and The Lost World, because I knew Jurassic Park III was coming out! That was like a year ago or so and I knew they'd put out a trilogy boxed set when JP3 was released so I decided to wait! Duration: 95
Awards: 1 win & 1 nomination
Starring: Edison Flores, Jesús Martínez, Cielo Muñoz
Summary: ‘La Sierra’, un documental de Medellín para Colombia

Genre: Documentary, Crime
Writer: Philippe Petit
Duration: 94
Awards: Won Oscar. Another 27 wins & 7 nominations
Starring: Philippe Petit, Jean François Heckel, Jean-Louis Blondeau, Annie Allix, David Forman
Summary:
(FILMAFFINITY)

On August 7, 1974, Philippe Petit, a French wire walker, juggler, and street performer days shy of his 25th birthday, spent 45 minutes walking, dancing, kneeling, and lying on a wire he and friends strung between the rooftops of the Twin Towers. Uses contemporary interviews, archival footage, and recreations to tell the story of his previous walks between towers of Notre Dame and of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, his passions and friendships, and the details of the night before the walk: getting cable into the towers, hiding from guards, and mounting the wire. It ends with observations of the profound changes the walk's success brought to Philippe and those closest to him.

Title: *Ministry Of Sound : The Ultimate Workout - Pump It Up, Burn It, Lose It
Studio: Ministry of Sound
Genre: Fitness
Summary: I have all the Pump It Up workouts and am extremely glad that I discovered them. I am now studying to be a gym instructor and it was these Workouts that motivated me right from the very beginning and I attribute my fitness, weight loss and even future career to these Ministry of Sound workouts!

They are fantastic and all have something differant to offer. They vary in difficulty and length which makes them ideal for alternating.

The first Pump it Up with Deanne Berry is the longest and probably the most intense in places (especially the Pump It up section). It is great if you are wanting a long workout to burn off lots of calories after indulging yourself at the weekend! You would have to be fairly fit in my opinion to get through the whole workout but you can always alternate sections on differant days if you wish.

The second, Beach Body Pump it Up with Fiona Fagan is shorter and less intense. It's great fun with excellent music and ideal to do on days where you don't want a heavy workout.

The third Pump it Up with Fiona Fagan has been criticised for being too difficult to follow especially in the dance section but I really enjoyed the challenge of learning the choreography and found this one really kept my interest and motivated me to keep doing it. It has excellent music and a great tums and bum section at the end. Definitely worth persevering with.

I gave out a whoop of joy when I saw the latest Pump It Up on the shelf in a local store! I am a fan of Deanne Berry as she had a lovely natural manner and is a great instructor.

My verdict is that this one is the best yet. Firstly the music is excellent which is important to keep you motivated. Secondly it has more sections and lots of variation. There isn't too much repetition within the sections which is a major plus. Thirdly the choreography is extremely well thought out and is easy to follow but with a bit of challenge there too. The BPM (dance moves section) is excellent and you really quite fancy yourself as a dancer whilst you are doing it! Easy to follow with great moves which you could even use on the dance floor if you had the nerve. The boxing section is the best one I have done out of my VAST selection of workout DVD's. Excellent music and the moves are set so well to it. It isn't repetitive and tedious like other boxing sections can be and has a bit of a dance twist to it with the choreography.

You can also design your own workout which is great. If I want a short intense workout and am lacking in time I just to the Aeroburn and Boxing sections with the warm up and cool down. That works well as a shorter workout which burns lots of calories.

If you are looking to buy just one DVD this year to get started then get this one. You will not be dissapointed.

Written by a 33 year old mother of two who has changed from an overweight, negative couch potato into a fit, postive and motivated person.

*Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series (5 dvds)
Title: *Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series (5 dvds)
Studio: BBC Warner
Genre: Documentary
Duration: 44
Starring: David Attenborough
Summary: As of its release in early 2007, "Planet Earth" is quite simply the greatest nature/wildlife series ever produced. Following the similarly monumental achievement of "The Blue Planet: Seas of Life", this astonishing 11-part BBC series is brilliantly narrated by Sir David Attenborough and sensibly organized so that each 50-minute episode covers a specific geographical region and/or wildlife habitat (mountains, caves, deserts, shallow seas, seasonal forests, etc.) until the entire planet has been magnificently represented by the most astonishing sights and sounds you'll ever experience from the comforts of home. The premiere episode, "From Pole to Pole," serves as a primer for things to come, placing the entire series in proper context and giving a general overview of what to expect from each individual episode. Without being overtly political, the series maintains a consistent and subtle emphasis on the urgent need for ongoing conservation, best illustrated by the plight of polar bears whose very behavior is changing (to accommodate life-threatening changes in their fast-melting habitat) in the wake of global warming--a phenomenon that this series appropriately presents as scientific fact. With this harsh reality as subtext, the series proceeds to accentuate the positive, delivering a seemingly endless variety of natural wonders, from the spectacular mating displays of New Guinea's various birds of paradise to a rare encounter with Siberia's nearly-extinct Amur Leopards, of which only 30 remain in the wild.
That's just a hint of the marvels on display. Accompanied by majestic orchestral scores by George Fenton, every episode is packed with images so beautiful or so forcefully impressive (and so perfectly photographed by the BBC's tenacious high-definition camera crews) that you'll be rendered speechless by the splendor of it all. You'll see a seal struggling to out-maneuver a Great White Shark; swimming macaques in the Ganges delta; massive flocks of snow geese numbering in the hundreds of thousands; an awesome night-vision sequence of lions attacking an elephant; the Colugo (or "flying lemur"--not really a lemur!) of the Philippines; a hunting alliance of fish and snakes on Indonesia's magnificent coral reef; the bioluminescent "vampire squid" of the deep oceans... these are just a few of countless highlights, masterfully filmed from every conceivable angle, with frequent use of super-slow-motion and amazing motion-controlled time-lapse cinematography, and narrated by Attenborough with his trademark combination of observational wit and informative authority. The result is a hugely entertaining series that doesn't flinch from the predatory realities of nature (death is a constant presence, without being off-putting), and each episode ends with 10-minute "Planet Earth Diaries" (exclusive to this DVD set) that cover a specific aspect of production, like "Diving with Pirahnas" or "Into the Abyss" (the latter showing the rigors of filming the planet's most spectacular caves, including the last filming ever officially permitted in the "Chandelier Ballroom," a crystal-encrusted cavern found over a mile deep in New Mexico's treacherous Lechuguilla, the deepest cave in the continental United States.)
With so many of Earth's natural wonders on display, it's only fitting that the final DVD in this five-disc set is devoted to "Planet Earth: The Future", a separate three-part series in which a global array of experts is assembled to discuss issues of conservation, protection of delicate ecosystems, and the socio-economic benefits of understanding nature as a commodity that returns trillions of dollars in value at no cost to Earth's human population. At a time when the multiple threats of global warming should be obvious to all, let's give Sir David the last word, from the closing of "Planet Earth"'s final episode: "We can now destroy or we can cherish--the choice is ours." "--Jeff Shannon"

Summary: Bill Maher interviews some of religion's oddest adherents. Muslims, Jews and Christians of many kinds pass before his jaundiced eye. Maher goes to a Creationist Museum in Kentucky, which shows that dinosaurs and people lived at the same time 5000 years ago. He talks to truckers at a Truckers' Chapel. (Sign outside: "Jesus love you.") He goes to a theme park called Holy Land in Florida. He speaks to a rabbi in league with Holocaust deniers. He talks to a Muslim musician who preaches hatred of Jews. Maher finds the unlikeliest of believers and, in a certain Vatican priest, he even finds an unlikely skeptic.

Title: *Sicko
Studio: Weinstein Company
Genre: Documentary
Duration: 123 mins
Starring: Michael Moore
Summary: "SiCKO" is more like a controlled howl of protest than a documentary. Toning down the rhetoric of past efforts--no CEOs, congressmen, or celebrities were accosted in the making of this film--Michael Moore's latest provocation is just as heartfelt, if not more heartbreaking. As he clarifies from the outset, his subject isn't the 45 million Americans without insurance, but those whose coverage has failed to meet their needs. He starts by speaking with patients who've been denied life-saving procedures, like chemotherapy, for the most spurious of reasons. Then he travels to Canada, England, and France to see if socialized medicine is as inefficient as U.S. politicians like to claim--especially those who receive funding from pharmaceutical companies. Moore finds quality care available to all, regardless as to income. He concludes with a stunt that made headlines when he assembles a group of 9/11 rescue workers suffering from a variety of afflictions. When Moore is informed that detainees at Guantánamo Bay--technically American soil--qualify for universal coverage, he and his companions travel to Cuba to get in on that action. It's a typically grandstanding move on Moore's part. And it proves remarkably effective when these altruistic individuals, who've either been denied treatment or forced to pay outrageous costs for their medication, experience a dramatically different system. Nine years in the making, "SiCKO" makes a persuasive case that it's time for America to catch up with the rest of the world. "--Kathleen C. Fennessy"

Duration: 96 mins
Starring: John Banzhaf, Bridget Bennett (II), Ron English (III), Don Gorske, Mary Gorske
Summary: Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, rejected five times by the USC film school, won the best director award at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival for this alarmingly personal investigation into the health hazards wreaked by our fast food nation. Under extensive medical supervision, Spurlock subjects himself to a steady diet of McDonald's cuisine for 30 days just to see what happens. In less than a week, his ordinarily fit body and equilibrium undergo dark and ugly changes: Spurlock grows fat, his cholesterol rockets north, his organs take a beating, and he becomes subject to headaches, mood swings, symptoms of addiction, and lessened sexual energy. The gimmick is too obvious to sustain a feature documentary; Spurlock actually spends most of the film probing insidious ways that fast food companies worm their way into school lunchrooms and the hearts of young children who spend hours in McDonald's playrooms. French fries never looked more nauseating. "--Tom Keogh"

Summary: Imagine a world far, far into the future. A world very different than our own where people have been wiped out by massive climatic and geological changes, nearly destroying the Earth. What would the world be like, and what kinds of creatures could survive? An international team of eminent scientists was formed to predict the future and its new life forms in five million, 100 million and 200 million years. The scientists predicted that the Earth would go through several phases, including Ice World after five million years, Hothouse World at 100 million years and New World at 200 million years. To portray the scenery as accurately as possible, a camera crew traveled to remote locations around the world. State-of-the-art animation helped bring to life such freakish beings as Flishes combining the characteristics of birds and fish, the giant slimemold known as the Slithersucker, the Toraton tortoise bigger than any dinosaur, tree-dwelling squids called Squibbons, the spewing Spitfire Bird and many more!

*The Secret

Title: *The Secret
Studio: TS Production, LLC
Genre: Documentary
Duration: 92 mins
Starring: Rhonda Byrne, Paul Harrington, Rev. Dr. Michael Beckwith, Neale Donald Walsch
Summary: Not really a movie or documentary, "The Secret" is more of a video seminar, a presentation featuring a series of authors, philosophers, doctors, quantum physicists, entrepreneurs, and spiritual practitioners expounding on the powers of The Secret (probably the most well-known of the presenters is Jack Canfield, author of "Chicken Soup for the Soul" and "The Success Principles"). What is "The Secret", exactly? "That principle can be summed up in three simple words: thoughts become things," proclaims writer Mike Dooley, author of "Notes from the Universe". Put it another way, it’s The Power of Positive Thinking and how it can be applied to attracting more money, better health, and relationships; in short, happiness. (There is a rundown of topics on the DVD Chapters menu).
Most of the material here is given in a straightforward manner, with the presenters simply talking into the camera to address the audience directly, which is good because it avoids the trap of pretense. On the other hand, the quick edits between presenters (would it hurt to let them say more than one sentence at a time?) don't help because it reduces many of their points to palatable sound bites and aphorisms. To many viewers, this may make the program come across as a series of nice ideas not rooted in reality. Plus it's somewhat spurious to claim that The Secret was well understood and practiced by specific individuals like Plato or Shakespeare (it's well known that some of the historical figures noted didn't exactly live happy or even prosperous lives, despite their achievements). But still, the primary message is one of positivity and hope for everyone. So what to make of it? In the end, programs like this generally find an audience that is open to the message, and many will probably find it to be a source of inspiration. Others will approach it with a good deal of skepticism or dismiss it as another way of marketing happiness the masses. It simply won’t resonate with everyone, but if it resonates with you, you're likely to enjoy it and get a lot out of it. Those looking for more on The Secret might want to check out the companion book by Rhonda Byrne. "--Daniel Vancini"

Title: *The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Genre: Educational
Duration: 64 mins
Starring: Deepak Chopra, Olivia Newton-John, Bill Duke, Tom Gegax, Judy Julin
Summary: The visual complement to his 1994 book of the same name, Deepak Chopra's "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" provides adherents with the same kind of inspiration and advice that have made the New Delhi-born doctor and writer's work so popular. Whether it will sway those who consider Chopra more charlatan than guru, however, is another matter. To be sure, there's much to be said for the virtues of cultivating one's consciousness, which Chopra describes as "a faculty more powerful and reliable than the five senses." In fact, much "is" said about it here, often by some familiar faces, including singer Olivia Newton-John (who also provided much of the music for the DVD), actor-director Bill Duke, musician Dave Stewart of the band Eurythmics, and professional golfer Tina Mickelson. Their testimonials, while varying in specifics, all have the same essential theme: only after they'd reached their lowest ebb (breast cancer for Newton-John, a car accident for Stewart, drug problems for Duke) were they able to "tap into the power of their inner beings" and realize their full potential. That's where the Seven Spiritual Laws come in. Some contain considerable wisdom; the fourth (called "The Law of Least Effort") recommends acceptance and responsibility as alternatives to blaming others, while the sixth ("The Law of Detachment") suggests that relinquishing one's obsession with a particular goal will make it more likely to happen. Others are frustratingly vague; learning to "efficiently, effortlessly co-create with the universe" or to be "grounded in the wisdom of uncertainty" is all well and good, but in the absence of practical steps it comes off as vapid New Age speak. Overall, the DVD is well-produced, mixing interviews with the principals (Chopra included) with some lovely cinematography and several sequences that combine live action (mostly featuring Newton-John) with imaginative, computer-generated landscapes and interiors. The package contains a 16-page "study guide" along with the DVD. "--Sam Graham"

John Glen
Title: 007 A View to a Kill
Studio: Angelsoft Inc.
Genre: Adventure
Writer: Raymond Benson
Duration: 131 mins
Starring: Roger Moore, Christopher Walken, Tanya Roberts, Grace Jones, Patrick Macnee
Summary: Roger Moore's last outing as James Bond is evidence enough that it was time to pass the torch to another actor. Beset by crummy action (an out-of-control fire engine?) and featuring a fading Moore still trying to prop up his mannered idea of style, the film is largely interesting for Christopher Walken's quirky performance as a sort-of supervillain who wants to take out California's Silicon Valley. Grace Jones has a spookily interesting presence as a lethal associate of Walken's (and who, in the best Bond tradition, has sex with 007 before trying to kill him later), and Patrick Macnee (Steed!) has a warm if brief bit. Even directed by John Glen, who brought some crackle to the Moore years in the Bond franchise, this is a very slight effort. "--Tom Keogh"

007 Diamonds Are Forever
Guy Hamilton
Title: 007 Diamonds Are Forever
Studio: MGM (Video & DVD)
Genre: Action & Adventure
Duration: 120
Starring: Sean Connery, Jill St. John, Charles Gray, Lana Wood, Jimmy Dean
Summary: Sean Connery retired from the 007 franchise after "You Only Live Twice" (replaced by George Lazenby in the underrated and underperforming "On Her Majesty's Secret Service") but was lured back for one last official appearance as James Bond in "Diamonds Are Forever". He's in fine form--cool but ruthless--in a sharp precredits sequence hunting the unkillable Blofeld (a suavely menacing Charles Gray in this incarnation), but the MacGuffin of a story (involving diamond smuggling, a superlaser on a satellite, and Blofeld's latest plot to rule the world ) is full of the groaning tongue-in-cheek gags that Roger Moore would make his signature. "Goldfinger" director Guy Hamilton keeps the film zipping along gamely from one entertaining set piece to another, including a terrific car chase in a parking lot, a battle with a pair of bikini-clad killer gymnasts named Bambi and Thumper, and a deadly game with a bizarre pair of fey, sardonic killers who dispatch their victims with elaborate invention. Jill St. John is the brassy but not too bright American smuggler Tiffany Case, and country singer and pork sausage king Jimmy Dean costars as a reclusive billionaire with not-so-subtle parallels to Howard Hughes. Shirley Bassey belts out the memorable theme song, one of the series' best. Connery retired again after this one but he returned once more, for "Never Say Never Again" 15 years later for a rival production company. "--Sean Axmaker"
007 Die Another Day
Lee Tamahori
Title: 007 Die Another Day
Studio: MGM (Video & DVD)
Genre: Action & Adventure
Writer: Robert Wade
Duration: 132 mins
Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Halle Berry, Rosamund Pike, Toby Stephens, Rick Yune
Summary: The 20th James Bond adventure, "Die Another Day" succeeds on three important fronts: it avoids comparison to "Austin Powers" by keeping its cheesy humor in check, allows Halle Berry to be sexy "and" worthy of a spinoff franchise, and keeps pace with the technical wizardry that modern action films demand. Pierce Brosnan's got style "and" staying power as James Bond, now bearing little resemblance to Ian Fleming's original British super-spy, but able to hold his own at the box office. He's paired with American agent Jinx (Berry) in chasing a genetically altered North Korean villain (Rick Yune) armed with a satellite capable of destroying just about anything. John Cleese and Judi Dench reprise their recurring roles (as "Q" and "M," respectively); they're accompanied by weapons-laden sports cars, a hokey cameo by Madonna (who sings the techno-pulsed theme song), and enough double-entendres to keep Bond-philes adequately shaken and stirred. With clever nods to 007's cinematic legacy, "Die Another Day" makes you welcome the familiar end-credits promise: James Bond "will" return. "--Jeff Shannon"

Title: 007 From Russia With Love
Studio: Electronic Arts (EA)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Thriller
Writer: Bruce Feirstein, Ian Fleming
Duration: 111 mins
Awards: 1 nomination
Starring: Sean Connery, Daniela Bianchi, Pedro Armendáriz, Lotte Lenya, Robert Shaw
Summary: Directed with consummate skill by Terence Young, the second James Bond spy thriller is considered by many fans to be the best of them all. Certainly Sean Connery was never better as the dashing Agent 007, whose latest mission takes him to Istanbul to retrieve a top-secret Russian decoding machine. His efforts are thwarted when he gets romantically distracted by a sexy Russian double agent (Daniela Bianchi), and is tracked by a lovely assassin (Lotte Lenya) with switchblade shoes, and by a crazed killer (Robert Shaw), who clashes with Bond during the film's dazzling climax aboard the Orient Express. "From Russia with Love" is classic James Bond, before the gadgets, pyrotechnics, and Roger Moore steered the movies away from the more realistic tone of the books by Ian Fleming. "--Jeff Shannon"

007 Live and Let Die
Guy Hamilton
Title: 007 Live and Let Die
Studio: MGM (Video & DVD)
Genre: Action & Adventure
Duration: 121 mins
Starring: Roger Moore, Yaphet Kotto, Jane Seymour, Clifton James, Julius Harris
Summary: Roger Moore was introduced as James Bond in this 1973 action movie featuring secret agent 007. More self-consciously suave and formal than predecessor Sean Connery, he immediately reestablished Bond as an uncomplicated and wooden fellow for the feel-good '70s. This film also marks a deviation from the more character-driven stories of the Connery years, a deliberate shift to plastic action (multiple chases, bravura stunts) that made the franchise more of a comic book or machine. If that's not depressing enough, there's even a good British director on board, Guy Hamilton ("Force 10 from Navarone"). The story finds Bond taking on an international drug dealer (Yaphet Kotto), and while that may be superficially relevant, it isn't exactly the same as fighting supervillains on the order of "Goldfinger". 007 Octopussy
John Glen
Title: 007 Octopussy
Studio: MGM / UA
Genre: Action & Adventure
Duration: 131 mins
Starring: Roger Moore, Maud Adams, Louis Jourdan, Patrick Barr, Kabir Bedi
Summary: Roger Moore was nearing the end of his reign as James Bond when he made "Octopussy", and he looks a little worn out. But the movie itself infuses some new blood into the old franchise, with a frisky pace and a pair of sturdy villains. Maud Adams--who'd also been in the Bond outing "The Man with the Golden Gun"--plays the improbably named Octopussy, while old smoothie Louis Jourdan is her crafty partner in crime. There's an island populated only by women, plus a fantastic sequence with a hand-to-hand fight that happens on a plane--and on "top" of a plane. The film even has an extra emotional punch, since this time out 007 is not only following the orders of Her Majesty's Secret Service, but he is also exacting a personal revenge: a fellow double-0 agent has been killed. Two Bond films were actually released in 1983 within a few months of each other, as "Octopussy" was followed by Sean Connery's comeback in "Never Say Never Again". The success of both pictures proved that there was still plenty of mileage left in the old license to kill, though Moore had one more workout--"A View to a Kill"--before hanging it up. And that title? The franchise had already used up the titles to Ian Fleming's novels, so "Octopussy" was taken from a lesser-known Fleming short story. "--Robert Horton"

007 The Living Daylights
John Glen (II)
Title: 007 The Living Daylights
Studio: MGM (Video & DVD)
Genre: Action & Adventure
Duration: 131 mins
Starring: Timothy Dalton, Maryam d'Abo, Jeroen Krabbé, Joe Don Baker, John Rhys-Davies
Summary: Timothy Dalton made his 007 debut in the lean, mean mode of Sean Connery, doing away with the pun-filled camp of Roger Moore's final outings. This James Bond is ruthless, tough, and romantic. "The Living Daylights", set during the thaw of the cold war, begins with the defection of Russian KGB General Koskov (Jeroen Krabb) and his revelation of a Soviet plot to eliminate Britain's secret agent force. Assigned to eliminate Koskov's Soviet boss (John Rhys-Davies), Bond uncovers a conspiracy involving Koskov and an American arms dealer (Joe Don Baker). Veteran series director John Glen's action scenes have never been better--especially the show-stopping mid-air battle on the net of a speeding cargo plane--and he returns the series to the smart, rough, high-energy adventures that made the Bond reputation. --"Sean Axmaker"
007 The Man with the Golden Gun
Guy Hamilton
Title: 007 The Man with the Golden Gun
Studio: MGM (Video & DVD)
Genre: Action & Adventure
Duration: 125
Starring: Roger Moore, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Maud Adams, Hervé Villechaize
Summary: The British superspy with a license to kill takes on his dark underworld double, a classy assassin who kills with golden bullets at $1 million a hit. Roger Moore, in his second outing as James Bond, meets Christopher Lee's Scaramanga, one of the most magnetic villains in the entire series, in this entertaining but rather wan entry in the 007 sweepstakes. Bond's globetrotting search takes him to Hong Kong, Bangkok, and finally China, where Scaramanga turns his island retreat into a twisted theme park for a deadly game of wits between the gunmen, moderated by Scaramanga's diminutive man Friday Nick Nack ("Fantasy Island"'s Hervé Villechaize). Britt Ekland does her best as the most embarrassingly inept Bond girl in 007 history, a clumsy, dim agent named Mary Goodnight who looks fetching in a bikini, while Maud Adams is Scaramanga's tough but haunted lover and assistant (she returns to the series as the title character in "Octopussy"). Clifton James, the redneck sheriff from "Live and Let Die", makes an embarrassing and ill-advised appearance as a racist tourist who briefly teams up with 007 in what is otherwise the film's highlight, a high-energy chase through the crowded streets of Bangkok that climaxes with a breathtaking midair corkscrew jump. Bond and company are let down by a lazy script, but Moore balances the overplayed humor with a steely performance and Lee's charm and enthusiasm makes Scaramanga a cool, deadly, and thoroughly enchanting adversary. "--Sean Axmaker"
007 The Spy Who Loved Me
Lewis Gilbert (II)
Title: 007 The Spy Who Loved Me
Studio: MGM / UA
Genre: Action & Adventure
Duration: 125 mins
Starring: Roger Moore, Barbara Bach, Curd Jürgens, Richard Kiel, Caroline Munro
Summary: The best of the James Bond adventures starring Roger Moore as tuxedoed Agent 007, this globe-trotting thriller introduced the steel-toothed Jaws (played by seven-foot-two-inch-tall actor Richard Kiel) as one of the most memorable and indestructible Bond villains. Jaws is so tenacious, in fact, that Moore looks genuinely frightened, and that adds to the abundant fun. This time Bond teams up with yet another lovely Russian agent (Barbara Bach) to track a pair of nuclear submarines that the nefarious Stromberg (Curt Jürgens) plans to use in his plot to start World War III. Featuring lavish sets designed by the great Ken Adam ("Dr. Strangelove"), "The Spy Who Loved Me" is a galaxy away from the suave Sean Connery exploits of the 1960s, but the film works perfectly as grandiose entertainment. From cavernous undersea lairs to the vast horizons of Egypt, this Bond thriller keeps its tongue firmly in cheek with a plot tailor-made for daredevil escapism. "--Jeff Shannon"
007 The World is Not Enough
Michael Apted
Title: 007 The World is Not Enough
Studio: MGM (Video & DVD)
Genre: Action & Adventure
Writer: Robert Wade
Duration: 128 mins
Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Sophie Marceau, Robert Carlyle, Denise Richards, Robbie Coltrane
Summary: In his 19th screen outing, Ian Fleming's superspy is once again caught in the crosshairs of a self-created dilemma: as the longest-running feature-film franchise, James Bond is an annuity his producers want to protect, yet the series' consciously formulaic approach frustrates any real element of surprise beyond the rote application of plot twists or jump cuts to shake up the audience. This time out, credit 007's caretakers for making some visible attempts to invest their principal characters with darker motives--and blame them for squandering "The World Is Not Enough"'s initial promise by the final reel.
By now, Bond pictures are as elegantly formal as a Bach chorale, and this one opens on an unusually powerful note. A stunning pre-title sequence reaches beyond mere pyrotechnics to introduce key plot elements as the action leaps from Bilbao to London. Bond 5.0, Pierce Brosnan, undercuts his usually suave persona with a darker, more brutal edge largely absent since Sean Connery departed. Equally tantalizing are our initial glimpses of Bond's nemesis du jour, Renard (Robert Carlyle), and imminent love interest, Elektra King (Sophie Marceau), both atypically complex characters cast with seemingly shrewd choices, and directed by the capable Michael Apted. The story's focus on post-Soviet geopolitics likewise starts off on a savvy note, before being overtaken by increasingly Byzantine plot twists, hidden motives, and reversals of loyalty superheated by relentless (if intermittently perfunctory) action sequences.
Indeed, the procession of perils plays like a greatest hits medley, save for a nifty sequence involving airborne buzz saws that's as enjoyable as it is preposterous. Bond's grimmer demeanor, while preferable to the smirk that eventually swallowed Roger Moore whole, proves wearying, unrelieved by any true wit. The underlying psychoses that propel Renard and Elektra eventually unravel into unconvincing melodrama, while Bond is supplied with a secondary love object, Denise Richards, who's even more improbable as a nuclear physicist. Ultimately, this "World" is not enough despite its better intentions. "--Sam Sutherland"
007 Thunderball
Terence Young
Title: 007 Thunderball
Studio: MGM (Video & DVD)
Genre: Action & Adventure
Duration: 125 mins
Starring: Sean Connery, Claudine Auger, Adolfo Celi, Luciana Paluzzi, Rik Van Nutter
Summary: James Bond's fourth adventure takes him to the Bahamas, where a NATO warplane with a nuclear payload has disappeared into the sea. Bond (Sean Connery) travels from a tiny health spa (where he tangles with a mechanized masseuse run amuck) to the casinos of Nassau and soon picks up the trail of SPECTRE's number-two man, Emilio Largo (Adolfo Celi), and his beautiful mistress, Domino (Claudine Auger), whom Bond soon seduces to his side. Equipped with more gadgets than ever, courtesy of the resourceful "Q" (Desmond Llewelyn), agent 007 escapes an ambush with a personal-size jet pack and takes to the water as he searches for the undersea plane, battles Largo's pet sharks, and finally leads the battle against Largo's scuba-equipped henchmen in a spectacular underwater climax. This thrilling Bond entry became Connery's most successful outing in the series and was remade in 1983 as "Never Say Never Again", with Connery returning to the role after a 12-year hiatus. Tom Jones belts out the bold theme song to another classic Maurice Binder title sequence. "--Sean Axmaker"

Richard Donner
Title: 16 Blocks
Studio: Warner Home Video
Genre: Action & Adventure
Writer: Richard Wenk
Duration: 102 mins
Starring: Bruce Willis, Mos Def, David Morse, Jenna Stern, Casey Sander
Summary: Fully recovering from the wretched flop "Timeline", director Richard Donner brings seasoned skill to "16 Blocks", a satisfying thriller boosted by intelligent plotting and the stellar pairing of Bruce Willis and Mos Def in quirky, well-written roles. Making the most of minimal dialogue, Willis plays Jack Mosley, a boozy, disillusioned New York City detective who reluctantly accepts an assignment to transport squeaky-voiced chatterbox Eddie Bunker (Mos Def) to a grand jury hearing where he's scheduled to testify against a group of corrupt, drug-dealing cops. They've got two hours to travel 16 blocks, but the dirtiest cop (David Morse) is determined to kill Eddie before he can testify; what he doesn't know is that Jack senses something in Eddie's seemingly innocent, optimistic demeanor that he wants to protect. Working from a tight, twisting screenplay by Richard Wenk, Donner turns familiar material into an efficient potboiler that delivers tense urban action (like Donner's earlier Mel Gibson hit "Conspiracy Theory") while leaving plenty of room for Willis and especially Mos Def (in a critically acclaimed performance) to develop their flawed yet admirable characters. "16 Blocks" may be a standard-issue thriller in many respects, but as a showcase for its appealing cast, it quickly rises above its generic limitations. "--Jeff Shannon"

Alejandro González Iñárritu
Title: 21 Grams
Studio: Focus Features
Genre: Drama
Writer: Guillermo Arriaga
Duration: 124 mins
Starring: Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Naomi Watts, Danny Huston, Carly Nahon
Summary: Sean Penn and Benecio Del Toro, two of the most gripping actors around, play wildly different men linked through a grieving woman (Naomi Watts, "Mulholland Drive", "The Ring") in "21 Grams". Del Toro ("Traffic", "The Usual Suspects") delves deep into the role of an ex-con turned born-again Christian, a deeply conflicted man struggling to set right a terrible accident, even at the expense of his family. Penn ("Mystic River", "Dead Man Walking") captures a cynical, philandering professor in dire need of a heart transplant, which he gets from the death of Watts' husband. "21 Grams" slips back in forth in time, creating an intricate emotional web out of the past and the present that slowly draws these three together; the result is remarkably fluid and compelling. The movie overreaches for metaphors towards the end, but that doesn't erase the power of the deeply felt performances. "--Bret Fetzer"

Spike Lee
Title: 25th Hour
Studio: Walt Disney Video
Genre: Drama
Writer: David Benioff
Duration: 135
Starring: Edward Norton, Barry Pepper, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rosario Dawson, Anna Paquin
Summary: "25th Hour" is a eulogy, mourning the New York of post-September 11, 2001, and the regrettable life of one of the city's least reputable citizens. Monty Brogan (Edward Norton) isn't a bad guy--in fact he's a mensch, adopting a battered dog in the film's mood-setting opening scene, and leading a decent life with his girlfriend (Rosario Dawson)... when he's not dealing narcotics. Facing a seven-year prison term, Monty spends his last free night with pals (Barry Pepper, Philip Seymour Hoffman) and visiting his understanding father (Brian Cox), while a Russian drug lord pressures him for getting busted. Lee directs this plotless, no-win scenario as the last gasp of a guy with nowhere to go, and the film (written by David Benioff, from his own novel) suffers from a similar loss of potential, lacking enough focus to make Monty's odyssey compelling. Instead, "25th Hour" (which also costars Anna Paquin) rambles from scene to lazy scene, vaguely lamenting that lives have been wasted, some by terrorism, others by self-destruction. "--Jeff Shannon"
27 Dresses
Anne Fletcher
Title: 27 Dresses
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Genre: Comedy
Writer: Aline Brosh McKenna
Duration: 105 mins
Starring: Katherine Heigl, James Marsden, Malin Akerman, Brian Kerwin, Charli Barcena
Summary: Katherine Heigl is delightful as Jane, a self-effacing Gal Friday so addicted to organizing weddings in her off time, that "27 Dresses" opens with her character juggling two nuptials on the same night. A perpetual bridesmaid, Jane’s hobby is discovered by a matrimony reporter named Kevin (James Marsden), who hides a romantic side behind his wall of cynicism. While Kevin gradually develops feelings for Jane, the latter’s superficial sister, Tess (Malin Akerman), pursues George (Edward Burns), Jane’s boss and the object of her love. This romantic circle could go on forever, except that Jane is unexpectedly moved by Kevin despite her general irritation with him and without knowing that he’s on the verge of sandbagging her with a ridiculing article in his newspaper. The situation is absurd, but the emotions are not. Heigl is very good, rooted in a long tradition of comely comediennes playing characters who fly under the radar of life. She makes Jane’s pain palpable and conveys her character’s inability to say no without making her look unappealing or weak. Marsden perfectly captures the part of a rumpled, underdressed writer with repressed passions, Akerman is as convincingly shrewish here as she was in "The Heartbreak Kid", and Burns is fine as one of those guys so busy saving the world he barely pays attention to the people in his life. The script by Aline Brosh McKenna ("The Devil Wears Prada") is fun if predictable, and Anne Fletcher’s direction is vibrant. --"Tom Keogh"

Studio: 20th Century Fox
Genre: Art House & International
Writer: Alex Garland
Duration: 113
Starring: Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Alex Palmer, Bindu De Stoppani
Summary: The director/producer team that created "Trainspotting" turn their dynamic cinematic imaginations to the classic science fiction scenario of the last people on Earth. Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma to find London deserted--until he runs into a mob of crazed plague victims. He gradually finds other still-human survivors (including Naomie Harris), with whom he heads off across the abandoned countryside to find the source of a radio broadcast that promises salvation. "28 Days Later" is basically an updated version of "The Omega Man" and other post-apocalyptic visions; but while the movie may lack originality, it makes up for it in vivid details and creepy paranoid atmosphere. "28 Days Later's" portrait of how people behave in extreme circumstances--written by novelist Alex Garland ("The Beach")--will haunt you afterward. Also featuring Brendan Gleeson ("The General, Gangs of New York") and Christopher Eccleston ("Shallow Grave, The Others"). "--Bret Fetzer"

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo
Title: 28 Weeks Later
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Genre: Art House & International
Duration: 113 mins
Starring: Catherine McCormack, Robert Carlyle, Amanda Walker, Shahid Ahmed, Garfield Morgan
Summary: As an exercise in pure, unadulterated terror, "28 Weeks Later" is a worthy follow-up to its acclaimed predecessor, "28 Days Later". In this ultraviolent sequel from Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (hired on the strength of his 2001 thriller "Intacto"), over six months have passed since the first film's apocalyptic vision of London overrun by infectious, plague-ridden zombies. Just when it seems the "rage virus" has been fully contained, and London is in the process of slowly recovering, an extremely unfortunate couple (Robert Carlyle, Catherine McCormack) is attacked by a small band of rampaging "ragers," and the cowardly husband escapes while his wife is attacked and presumably infected. Their surviving children (Imogen Poots, Mackintosh Muggleton) fall under the protection of a U.S. Army sharpshooter (Jeremy Renner), but nobody's safe for long as "28 Weeks Later" goes into action-packed overdrive, with scene after blood-gushing scene of carnage and decimation. The film's visuals follow the look established in "28 Days Later", this time with bigger and better scenes of a nearly abandoned London on the brink of utter destruction. The military subplot gets a bold assist from Harold Perrineau (as a daring helicopter pilot) and Idris Elba (in a too-brief role as the military commander), and their firepower--not to mention the efficient lethality of helicopter blades--turns "28 Weeks Later" into a nonstop bloodbath that's way too intense for younger viewers and guaranteed to leave hardcore horror fans gruesomely satisfied. That's all there is to it--this film is almost plotless and dialogue is minimal throughout--but as a truly terrifying vision of survival amidst chaos, "28 Weeks Later" honors its origins and qualifies as a solid double-feature with "Children of Men". Could there be another sequel? Thanks to the "chunnel," the answer in this case is definitely oui. --"Jeff Shannon"

David Slade
Title: 30 Days of Night
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Horror
Duration: 113 mins
Starring: Josh Hartnett, Melissa George, Danny Huston, Ben Foster, Mark Rendall
Summary: David ("Hard Candy") Slade directs this nerve-jangling adaptation of the popular graphic novel series about a mob of vampires that overruns a remote Alaskan town in the grip of "30 Days of Night". Josh Hartnett and Melissa George are the film's de facto heroes (he's the stoic town sheriff and she's his estranged fire-marshal wife) but the picture's real MVP is Slade's camera (along with cinematographer Jo Willems), which careens across the town's snowy landscape to detail the vampires' horrific assault on its inhabitants, which are quickly pared down to a hardy few. The script, co-written by the source material's creator, Steve Niles, along with "Pirates of the Caribbean"'s Stuart Beattie and "Hard Candy"'s Brian Nelson), proudly wears its influences on its crimson-stained sleeve (Bram Stoker's "Dracula", natch, but also "Salem's Lot, Night of the Living Dead", and John Carpenter's version of "The Thing") and boils down the graphic novels to a series of tense and extremely bloody standoffs between Harnett and George's band of survivors and the vaguely Slavic and ferocious bloodsuckers led by Marlow (a feral and frightening Danny Huston). And if the characters seem stock and the finale begs suspension of disbelief, the set pieces leading up to it are sufficiently supercharged with suspense and violence to please most horror fans. Standouts in the supporting cast are Ben Foster as the film's Renfield figure and Mark Boone Junior; the disturbing score by Brian Reitzell also merits a mention. "--Paul Gaita"

Summary: Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on "The Daily Show" and in movies like "Bruce Almighty" and "Anchorman"--leaps into leading man status with "The 40 Year-Old Virgin". There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd ("Clueless", "The Shape of Things") and Jane Lynch ("Best in Show", "A Mighty Wind"), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener ("Lovely & Amazing", "Being John Malkovich"). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. "--Bret Fetzer"

Peter Segal
Title: 50 First Dates
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Writer: George Wing
Duration: 99 mins
Starring: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Rob Schneider, Sean Astin, Lusia Strus
Summary: With generous amounts of good luck and good timing, "50 First Dates" set an all-time box-office record for the opening weekend of a romantic comedy; whether it deserved such a bonanza is another issue altogether. It's a sweet-natured vehicle for sweet-natured stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, and their track record with "The Wedding Singer" no doubt factors in its lowbrow appeal. But while the well-matched lovebirds wrestle with a gimmicky plot (she has no short-term memory, so he has to treat every encounter as their first), director Peter Segal (who directed Sandler in "Anger Management") ignores the intriguing potential of their predicament (think "Memento" meets "Groundhog Day") and peppers the proceedings with the kind of juvenile humor that Sandler fans have come to expect. The movie sneaks in a few heartfelt moments amidst its inviting Hawaiian locations, and that trained walrus is charmingly impressive, but you can't quite shake the feeling that too many good opportunities were squandered in favor of easy laughs. Like Barrymore's character, you might find yourself forgetting this movie shortly after you've seen it. "--Jeff Shannon"

Title: 88 Minutes
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller
Writer: Gary Scott Thompson
Duration: 110 mins
Starring: Al Pacino, Alicia Witt, Benjamin McKenzie, Leelee Sobieski, Amy Brenneman
Summary: Al Pacino looks startled through much of "88 Minutes", as though taken by surprise at being cast in a thriller that must've first passed across the desks of Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford. Still, Pacino brings his usual oomph to the role of a Seattle forensic psychiatrist, whose testimony secured the death sentence for a crazy serial killer (Neal McDonough). Wouldn't you know it, the very day the killer is sentenced to die, a copycat "Seattle Slayer" is on the loose, and Pacino starts getting ominous phone calls telling him the exact time of his own death. Tick tock: it's 88 minutes away. The film then serves up more red herrings than a Stalingrad fish fry, as possible culprits pop up every five minutes or so (among them an attractive group of med-school students played by Alicia Witt, Leelee Sobieski, and Benjamin McKenzie). Lapses in logic abound, but if you hunker down and zone in on Pacino's weary-eyed, poufy-haired professionalism, you can enjoy the goings-on. (They even make him run up flights of stairs, which one would have thought beyond him now.) Seattle's frequent stunt double, Vancouver, B.C., stands in as a location, and Jon Avnet supplies the slick direction. The cast is talented (including Amy Brenneman), leading you to guess that a lot of people will do anything just to work with Al Pacino. And you've got to admire Pacino's chutzpah at sharing the screen with statuesque actresses such as Brenneman and Sobieski; they tower over him, but he still holds his own. --"Robert Horton"

300
Zack Snyder
Title: 300
Studio: Warner Home Video
Genre: Action, Drama, History, War
Duration: 117 mins
Starring: Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, Dominic West, David Wenham, Vincent Regan
Summary: Like "Sin City" before it, "300" brings Frank Miller and Lynn Varley's graphic novel vividly to life. Gerard Butler ("Beowulf and Grendel", "The Phantom of the Opera") radiates pure power and charisma as Leonidas, the Grecian king who leads 300 of his fellow Spartans (including David Wenham of "The Lord of the Rings", Michael Fassbender, and Andrew Pleavin) into a battle against the overwhelming force of Persian invaders. Their only hope is to neutralize the numerical advantage by confronting the Persians, led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), at the narrow strait of Thermopylae.
More engaging than "Troy", the tepid and somewhat similar epic of ancient Greece, "300" is also comparable to "Sin City" in that the actors were shot on green screen, then added to digitally created backgrounds. The effort pays off in a strikingly stylized look and huge, sweeping battle scenes. However, it's not as to-the-letter faithful to Miller's source material as "Sin City" was. The plot is the same, and many of the book's images are represented just about perfectly. But some extra material has been added, including new villains (who would be considered "bosses" if this were a video game, and it often feels like one) and a political subplot involving new characters and a significantly expanded role for the Queen of Sparta (Lena Headey). While this subplot by director Zack Snyder ("Dawn of the Dead") and his fellow co-writers does break up the violence, most fans would probably dismiss it as filler if it didn't involve the sexy Headey. Other viewers, of course, will be turned off by the waves of spurting blood, flying body parts, and surging testosterone. (The six-pack abs are also relentless, and the movie has more and less nudity--more female, less male--than the graphic novel.) Still, as a representation of Miller's work and as an ancient-themed action flick with a modern edge, "300" delivers. "--David Horiuchi"
The 300 Spartans
Rudolph Maté
Title: The 300 Spartans
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Genre: Action & Adventure
Writer: Ugo Liberatore
Duration: 114 mins
Starring: Richard Egan, Ralph Richardson, Diane Baker, Barry Coe, David Farrar
Summary: The futile yet inspiring stand of 300 Greek soldiers against the hugest army ever assembled in the ancient world inspired this typical example of Hollywood epic movie-making. King Leonidas of Sparta (Richard Egan, "Demetrius and the Gladiators"), prevented by political squabbling from sending his entire army to defend the narrow pass of Thermopylae, sets out with his personal bodyguard to fight off the ambitious Persian king, Xerxes. Along the way are a pair of young lovers, scantily clad dancing girls, and treachery though a secret mountain path. "The 300 Spartans", made in 1961, has an overstated cold war subtext--there's much talk of freedom vs. slavery--and there are a few too many shots of armored men marching through the Greek countryside, but the historical conflict has a fundamentally stirring quality. Also featuring Sir Ralph Richardson ("Dr. Zhivago", "Dragonslayer") as a wily Athenian politician. "--Bret Fetzer"

1408
Mikael Håfström
Title: 1408
Studio: Weinstein Company
Genre: Horror
Writer: Stephen King
Duration: 104
Starring: John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack, Tony Shalhoub, Len Cariou
Summary: As creepfests go, "1408" is right up there with "The Shining", also inspired by a Stephen King work and featuring a menacing hotel and the wobbly sanity of a writer lodging there. "It's an evil [bleep]-ing room!" intones Samuel L. Jackson, who plays the smooth but vaguely sinister manager of the Dolphin Hotel. John Cusack is stellar as Mike Enslin, a cynical Everyschlub who writes "occult travel guides," but believes in nothing, especially anything resembling an afterlife.
What happens in room 1408 of the Dolphin may change Enslin forever--if he survives the first hour. The thrills range from jumpy "gotcha" moments involving mirror images, to more traditional horror fare like bleeding walls, to truly diabolical touches like the recurrence of the Carpenters' "We've Only Just Begun." (Shudder.) The film does a nice job of weaving the operatic horror effects with the truly heart-breaking backstory of the death of Enslin's young daughter and his marriage--perhaps the only two things Enslin has ever believed in. And thankfully, there's just enough humor to leaven the intensity at key moments; Cusack is unparalleled when it comes to delivering a self-deprecating wisecrack, even as his life passes before his eyes. Get your adrenaline pumping and check into this room. Oh, and sorry, no refunds. "A.T. Hurley"
2001 - A Space Odyssey
Stanley Kubrick
Title: 2001 - A Space Odyssey
Studio: Warner Home Video
Genre: Art House & International
Writer: Arthur C. Clarke
Duration: 145 mins
Starring: Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, Daniel Richter, Leonard Rossiter
Summary: When Stanley Kubrick recruited Arthur C. Clarke to collaborate on "the proverbial intelligent science fiction film," it's a safe bet neither the maverick auteur nor the great science fiction writer knew they would virtually redefine the parameters of the cinema experience. A daring experiment in unconventional narrative inspired by Clarke's short story "The Sentinel," "2001" is a visual tone poem (barely 40 minutes of dialogue in a 139-minute film) that charts a phenomenal history of human evolution. From the dawn-of-man discovery of crude but deadly tools in the film's opening sequence to the journey of the spaceship "Discovery" and metaphysical birth of the "star child" at film's end, Kubrick's vision is meticulous and precise. In keeping with the director's underlying theme of dehumanization by technology, the notorious, seemingly omniscient computer HAL 9000 has more warmth and personality than the human astronauts it supposedly is serving. (The director also leaves the meaning of the black, rectangular alien monoliths open for discussion.) This theme, in part, is what makes "2001" a film like no other, though dated now that its postmillennial space exploration has proven optimistic compared to reality. Still, the film is timelessly provocative in its pioneering exploration of inner- and outer-space consciousness. With spectacular, painstakingly authentic special effects that have stood the test of time, Kubrick's film is nothing less than a cinematic milestone--puzzling, provocative, and perfect. Summary: In Wong Kar Wai's quasi-sequel to "In the Mood for Love", 2046 is a hotel room, a futuristic story, and a state of mind. Tony Leung returns as Chow, but perhaps not the same Chow who appeared in the first film. Starting three years later in 1966, we see Chow on various Christmases as he lives, loves, and writes in a hotel and nearby restaurants. Although he is less sensitive and more of a ladies man now, Chow's love life always seems to exceed his grasp. Whether the character is the same (the director calls this an "echo" of the first movie) might be trivial. Hong Kong filmmaker Wai is such a visualist ("Time" magazine tabbed him as the "world's most romantic filmmaker"), the images wash over with swirling smoke, neon lights, and the faces of his outstanding cast, all lovingly photographed and smoothly scored. There's a lot more going on than the visuals, and Wai's fans will certainly find more and more details on repeated viewings. We travel into Chow's futuristic story, where the acquaintances become fictional characters traveling to a place where "everyone goes" to recapture lost memories. Often Chow talks about never seeing a lover ever again, but eventually bumps into her. The final result is a film some will cherish; others will long for the more traditional storyline of the first film. Wai certainly finds a new direction for actress Ziyi Zhang ("House of Flying Daggers") as a prostitute who becomes one of Chow's many lovers. And Leung continues to be one of the world's great film actors, with a face and acting style the camera just loves. "--Doug Thomas"
