A Walk in the Clouds
Alfonso Arau
Title: A Walk in the Clouds
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Genre: Drama, Romance, War
Writer: Vittorio de Benedetti
Duration: 102 mins
Starring: Keanu Reeves, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Anthony Quinn, Giancarlo Giannini, Angélica Aragón
Summary: Keanu Reeves is completely wooden in this romantic misfire by Alfonso Arau ("Like Water for Chocolate"). Reeves plays a World War II vet who hits the road as a traveling salesman and agrees to help a desperate, pregnant woman (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon)--who is afraid to let her father (Giancarlo Giannini) see her condition--by pretending to be her husband. Most of the story takes place in the old man's vineyard, and Arau makes a life of swollen fruit, grape-stomping, sunlight, and tan flesh that looks amazingly erotic. But there are plenty of sillier distractions, such as the sight of farm hands chasing insects with flapping gossamer wings attached to their arms. Reeves is terribly self-conscious, while stalwart Anthony Quinn is memorable as the damsel's benevolent grandfather. "--Tom Keogh"

Title: War of the Worlds
Studio: Dreamworks Video
Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Writer: Josh Friedman
Duration: 116 mins
Starring: Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Tim Robbins, Miranda Otto, Justin Chatwin
Summary: Despite super effects, a huge budget, and the cinematic pedigree of alien-happy Steven Spielberg, this take on H.G. Wells's novel is basically a horror film packaged as a sci-fi thrill ride. Instead of a mad slasher, however, Spielberg (along with writers Josh Friedman & David Koepp) utilizes aliens hell-bent on quickly destroying humanity, and the terrifying results that prey upon adult fears, especially in the post-9/11 world. The realistic results could be a new genre, the grim popcorn thriller; often you feel like you're watching "Schindler's List" more than Spielberg's other thrill-machine movies ("Jaws", "Jurassic Park"). The film centers on Ray Ferrier, a divorced father (Tom Cruise, oh so comfortable) who witnesses one giant craft destroy his New Jersey town and soon is on the road with his teen son (Justin Chatwin) and preteen daughter (Dakota Fanning) in tow, trying to keep ahead of the invasion. The film is, of course, impeccably designed and produced by Spielberg's usual crew of A-class talent. The aliens are genuinely scary, even when the film--like the novel--spends a good chunk of time in a basement. Readers of the book (or viewers of the deft 1953 adaptation) will note the variation of whom and how the aliens come to Earth, which poses some logistical problems. The film opens and closes with narration from the novel read by Morgan Freeman, but Spielberg could have adapted Orson Welles's words from the famous Halloween Eve 1938 radio broadcast: "We couldn't soap all your windows and steal all your garden gates by tomorrow night, so we did the best next thing: we annihilated the world." The Watcher
Joe Charbanic
Title: The Watcher
Studio: Universal Studios
Genre: Mystery & Suspense
Writer: Darcy Meyers
Duration: 97 mins
Starring: James Spader, Keanu Reeves, Marisa Tomei, Ernie Hudson, Chris Ellis
Summary: James Spader stars as Joel Campbell, a former detective traumatized by the death of his lover at the hands of a serial killer he'd been hunting--a psychopath who has taken their combative relationship a little too personally, and has now tracked the retired Campbell down in Chicago. The killer, who methodically studies his victims before killing them, starts sending Campbell photographs of prospective victims and gives him a day to find them before they're killed. Campbell rises to the challenge, returns to his role as detective, and launches a comprehensive manhunt for the killer and the women in the photographs. "The Watcher" is surprisingly watchable--though it does suffer from an excessive use of arty cinematography. But while the psychological interpretation of the killer's behavior is a little too schematic to be convincing, the portrayal of Campbell is quite strong, particularly due to Spader's performance. A much-underrated actor, Spader is lean and efficient in his portrayal, rarely given to flashy histrionics, but compelling and emotionally complex. Unfortunately, the killer is played by Keanu Reeves; and though Reeves isn't as terrible an actor as some critics may say, he's out of his depth here. Still, Spader carries most of the movie, and the sequences in which the police are trying to track down the victims are nicely suspenseful--in fact, the movie is overall more interested in suspense than gore, making it a pleasant change from most contemporary thrillers. Also starring Marisa Tomei as Campbell's psychiatrist and budding romantic interest. "--Bret Fetzer"

We Are Marshall
McG
Title: We Are Marshall
Studio: Warner Home Video
Genre: Drama
Duration: 131
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Matthew Fox, Anthony Mackie, David Strathairn, Ian McShane
Summary: There seems to be no end to beating-the-odds football movies these days, and if they all peak with a breathless moment of anticipation during a clutch play, then "We Are Marshall", based on a true story, has plenty of (mostly good) company. Matthew McConaughey plays Jack Lengyel, who becomes head coach--more or less by default--of Marshall University's rebuilding varsity football team in Huntington, W. Va., after the school's 37-member team and coaches (and a number of others) die in a plane crash in the Appalachian Mountains on Nov. 14, 1970. Facing an indifferent college president (David Strathairn) ready to shut the football program down, a morose assistant coach (Matthew Fox), and a charged-up player (Anthony Mackie) who missed the doomed flight due to an injury, Lengyel is faced with fielding a new team and putting the players through their paces. There are the usual, perhaps too-familiar, training montages and field action, but screenwriter Jamie Linden and director McG (Charlie's Angels) also draw some very good performances from the likes of Kate Mara and Ian McShane, contributing to an emotional tapestry conveying a powerful sense of how such a sizable loss affects a small community. "--Tom Keogh"
On the DVD
Introduced by director McG, "Legendary Coaches" (37 minutes) has real-life coach Jack Lengyel (portrayed in the film by Matthew McConaughey) recalling his time at Marshall and reading a letter he received from President Nixon. Then five championship coaches discuss their coaching philosophies and overcoming adversity: Bobby Bowden (Florida State football, and also portrayed in the film as the 1971 coach at West Virginia), Pat Summit (Tennessee women's basketball), Lute Olsen (Arizona men's basketball), George Horton (Cal State Fullerton baseball), and John Wooden (UCLA men's basketball). Also included are a current promotional spot for Marshall University and the theatrical trailer. "--David Horiuchi"

We Own the Night
James Gray
Title: We Own the Night
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Drama
Duration: 118 mins
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix, Eva Mendes, Robert Duvall, Alex Veadov
Summary: In "We Own the Night", Joaquin Phoenix, whose eyes burn with sullen anger even when he's looking at the woman he loves, plays Bobby Green, a nightclub manager in the 1980s who gets caught between his blood family he tried to leave behind--a long line of police officers--and his chosen family of friends and business partners, who turn out to be drug dealers. His father (Robert Duvall) and brother (Mark Wahlberg) want Bobby to help their investigation, but Bobby resists--until the conflict takes a brutal turn. Writer/director James Gray wears his influences on his sleeve; he's clearly seen every movie that Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola ever made and aspires to follow in their footsteps. The familiarity of the movie's territory dilutes its impact, but the plot of "We Own the Night" remains unpredictable, the performances have a clean vitality, and Gray's moody visual style brings some life to the genre. Phoenix ("Walk the Line") dives into his role, sifting through layers of guilt and familial resentment; Wahlberg and Duvall play parts they've essentially played a dozen times, but do so with commitment and integrity. Also featuring Eva Mendes (Ghost Rider) as Bobby's devoted girlfriend, who questions just how much she'll have to give up for him. "--Bret Fetzer"

Gore Verbinski
Title: The Weather Man
Studio: Paramount
Genre: Action & Adventure
Writer: Steve Conrad
Duration: 102
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Hope Davis, Nicholas Hoult, Michael Caine, Gemmenne de la Peña
Summary: Nobody does comic existential angst like Nicolas Cage, who gets a good workout in "The Weather Man", an underrated slice of quiet desperation. Cage plays David Spritz, a Chicago TV meteorologist who knows only too well the constant uncertainty of predicting the weather. Despite a possible offer from a network morning show, David's life is a mess: he's estranged from his kids and irritated wife (Hope Davis), he's perpetually at odds with his remote father (Michael Caine), and lately people on the street have had the disconcerting habit of throwing food at him. Director Gore Verbinski ("Pirates of the Caribbean") has perhaps too heavy a touch for this kind of comic melancholy, but screenwriter Steven Conrad has an interesting, almost Mamet-like ear for "written" dialogue--Cage has a few voiceover monologues, including an uproarious sequence involving tartar sauce and a walk to the store, that are hugely funny. It's possible that we've seen Cage in this kind of character one too many times, but he's still good at it, and his doleful face and pasted-on smile fit the mood of the picture. Unlike the heroes of most Hollywood movies, David Spritz doesn't always--or often--do the right thing, but Cage makes you want to see the poor sap make it. "--Robert Horton"
Wedding Crashers
David Dobkin
Title: Wedding Crashers
Studio: New Line Home Video
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Writer: Steve Faber
Duration: 119 mins
Starring: Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams, Christopher Walken, Isla Fisher
Summary: With Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as a pair of brazen wedding crashers, this buddy/romantic comedy milks a few big laughs from its foolproof premise. Under the direction of David Dobkin (who previously worked with Wilson on "Shanghai Knights"), the movie ranges from bawdy romp to mushy romance, and that tonal identity crisis curtails the overall hilarity. But when the well-teamed costars are firing on all pistons with fast-paced dialogue and manic situations, belly laughs are delivered at a steady clip. Things get complicated when the guys infiltrate the family of the Treasury Secretary (Christopher Walken), resulting in a romantic pair-off between Vaughn and the congressman's oversexed daughter Gloria (Isla Fisher) while Wilson sincerely woos another daughter, Claire (Rachel McAdams), who's unhappily engaged to an Ivy League cheater (Bradley Cooper). Walken is more or less wasted in his role, but Jane Seymour and Henry Gibson make amusing appearances, and a surprise guest arrives late in the game for some over-the-top scene-stealing. It's all a bit uneven, but McAdams (considered by some to be "the next Julia Roberts") is a pure delight, and with enough laughs to make it easily recommended, "Wedding Crashers" will likely find its place on DVD shelves alongside other flawed but enjoyable R-rated comedies that embrace a naughtier, nastier brand of humor with no need for apologies. "--Jeff Shannon"
On the DVD
The "Uncorked" edition of "Wedding Crashers" adds about 8 minutes of footage to the theatrical release. Of chief interest are extended beach and bathroom scenes between Vince Vaughn and Isla Fisher, and Vaughn's extended confession to Father O'Neil (Henry Gibson), but there are also new scenes featuring Keir O'Donnell as the eccentric Todd and Ellen Albertini Dow as the potty-mouthed grandmother. This edition is billed as unrated because it wasn't resubmitted to the MPAA, but the sexier bathroom scene and coarser confession aren't particularly raunchier than the original film, and there's no additional nudity. You can watch the Uncorked edition once to see the new footage, but for subsequent viewings you'll probably choose to stick with the theatrical release, which is also included on the DVD.
Bonus features consist of two very good commentary tracks, one by director David Dobkin and another by Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Dobkin's is more technically informative, and he specifically discusses why the added scenes were originally cut. Vaughn and Wilson are a little more subdued than might be expected, but they share some laughs, recall some material that was left out, and wander into irrelevant territory such as football and Wilson's dog. Other features include four deleted scenes with optional commentary by Dobkin, and two featurettes covering the making of the film (including the logistics of staging five different weddings, and interviews with the "magic and balloon consultant") and Vaughn and Wilson's meandering discussion of "the rules" of wedding crashing. For a more organized recap, there's a 24-screen text-only list of all the rules. The opening menu is clever, but slow to load after you've watched it the first time. "--David Horiuchi"

Title: The Wedding Date
Studio: Universal Pictures
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Writer: Elizabeth Young
Duration: 90 mins
Starring: Dermot Mulroney, Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Amy Adams, Sarah Parish
Summary: If you're a fan of the frazzled comic rhythms Debra Messing plies on "Will & Grace", or if you're pre-sold on the concept of Dermot Mulroney as the world's most dashing heartthrob--an idea given ample evidence here--this escapist romance may provide just enough distraction. "The Wedding Date"'s "Pretty Woman"-in-reverse plot finds Kat Kat Ellis (Messing) hiring expensive male escort Nick Mercer (Mulroney) to fly to London and pose as her dashing new boyfriend at her sister's wedding so she can face the best man, an ex-fiancé who broke her heart. Non-fans of the stars or romantic comedies in general beware: there's no real chemistry or conflict, and you should alert the media if you can determine exactly when and why Kat and Nick fall in love. Mulroney has nothing to do but be sensitively suave--the film's entire running time is spent waiting for Kat to realize that Nick, hooker or no, is the best thing that ever happened to her (her father may be cinema's first dad to ever encourage his daughter to snare a gigolo while she still can). This is a relatively painless but forgettable first Date; you probably won't need a second assignation. "--Steve Wiecking"
Wedding Daze
Title: Wedding Daze
Studio: MGM (Video & DVD)
Genre: Comedy
Duration: 92 mins
Starring: Jason Biggs
Summary: Best known as a comedian, "Stella"’s Michael Ian Black makes his directorial debut with "Wedding Daze", AKA "The Pleasure of Your Company". In the prologue, Anderson (Jason Biggs) dresses up as Cupid and proposes to his perfect girlfriend, who promptly keels over. A year later, he's still in mourning. Meanwhile, Katie (Isla Fisher) is also seeing a seemingly flawless fellow, and though her mother (Joanna Gleason) pressures her to accept his proposal, Katie has her doubts. The next day, she meets the unemployed Anderson at the diner where she works. On a dare, he asks her to marry him. Not only does she accept--she moves in with him. They make for an odd couple, but not as odd as their parents: Katie's stepfather (Matt Malloy) is a Jewish inventor, while her birth father (Joe Pantoliano) is a Buddhist convict; Anderson's parents (Margo Martindale and Edward Herrmann), on the other hand, are "very" happily married (suggestive words send them into a sexual frenzy). Clearly, Anderson and Katie's differing backgrounds create a momentary stumbling block, but their breakup lasts as long as their courtship--blink and you'll miss it. Denied a US theatrical release, "Wedding Daze" is a rough-around-the-edges, if sweet-natured romp. At the very least, it's superior to other wedding-oriented comedies of the time, like the crass "License to Wed". There are a few unnecessary gross-out gags, but an appealing cast--including Rob Corddry as a good-natured deputy--distract from the more awkward moments. "--Kathleen C. Fennessy"

Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins
Title: Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins
Studio: Universal Studios
Genre: Comedy
Duration: 114 mins
Starring: Martin Lawrence, James Earl Jones, Margaret Avery, Nicole Ari Parker, Mike Epps
Summary: While its story might sound terribly interesting, "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins" is largely a vehicle for gross-out sight gags and grotesque performances by performers who, in many cases, don't need to do such things. Martin Lawrence stars as R.J. Stevens, a successful, Jerry Springer-like, television talk show host who sets aside his perfect life with a sweet son (Damani Roberts) and celebrity girlfriend (Joy Bryant) to attend his parents' golden wedding anniversary back home in Georgia. From the moment he arrives, all the reasons R.J. left to reinvent himself on the West Coast become clear. His siblings and cousins (Mike Epps, Mo'Nique, Michael Clarke Duncan, Cedric the Entertainer) quickly put him in his place, reminding him that his name is actually Roscoe Jenkins. His sweet mother (Margaret Avery) watches impassively while R.J.'s dad (James Earl Jones) strikes one disapproving note after another. R.J. would be content to wait out the anniversary events and go home, but the arrival of a woman (Nicole Ari Parker) he loved but couldn't keep during his adolescence changes everything, bringing out the competitive survivor within. Written and directed by Malcolm D. Lee ("Undercover Brother"), "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins" promises rich comedy and dramatic flavorings, as well as a bunch of delightful actors doing what only they can do best. But Lee subverts the project for cheap and easy laughs, using his best material to do little else than bridge scenes of bad slapstick, bestial perversity, clownish sex and irritating, motormouth rants from the likes of Mo'Nique and Epps. This a hard movie to sit through at 114 minutes, one of those what-were-they-thinking-when-they-made-this films. --"Tom Keogh"

Title: Welcome to Collinwood

Genre: Comedy, Crime
Duration: 86 mins
Starring: William H. Macy, Isaiah Washington, Sam Rockwell, Michael Jeter, Luis Guzmán
Summary: A nifty little film about a gang of would-be crooks and a heist that goes awry. That probably sounds like a premise you've seen about a hundred times in the past few years, but "Welcome to Collinwood" rises above most other caper movies due to a strong script, clean and inventive direction, and above all an outstanding cast: Sam Rockwell ("Galaxy Quest", "Safe Men"), William H. Macy ("Fargo", "State and Main"), Isaiah Washington ("Clockers", "Out of Sight"), Luis Guzmán ("The Limey", "Punch-Drunk Love"), Jennifer Esposito ("Summer of Sam", "Shaft"), Patricia Clarkson ("High Art", "Joe Gould's Secret"), and several other great character actors have such chemistry, wit, and sheer talent that it's a pleasure to watch them scheme, wriggle, and woo each other through an elaborate plan that's doomed from the start. George Clooney also appears (and coproduced the movie). Smart and charming. "--Bret Fetzer"

Julian Farino
Title: What Happens In Vegas
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Duration: 99 mins
Starring: Maddie Corman, Dennis Farina, Rick Garcia, Queen Latifah, Deirdre O'Connell
Summary: "What Happens in Vegas" is a comedy waiting to happen. It takes an old premise (drunk strangers regretting their decision to get married in Las Vegas) and adds in a dilemma (a $3 million slot machine win) that could've been easily resolved. But then again, there would've been no movie if the unhappily wedded couple figured out that splitting the money in half and getting their marriage annulled would've been quick and effective. Cameron Diaz plays uptight clean-freak Joy, who has just been dumped by her fiance. Ashton Kutcher is Jack, a slacker furniture maker who has been fired--by his own dad. Each goes to Vegas to let off some steam. And while they have nothing in common (except being exceptionally good looking) they make out, get married, and fight over the money Jack wins with Joy's quarter. Instead of letting the couple get divorced, a judge sentences the odd couple to half a year of marriage. What happens in Vegas doesn't stay in Vegas, but extends into New York where Jack and Joy live. Both actors have fared well in comedies, especially Diaz in "My Best Friend's Wedding". And while Kutcher still has to live down "Dude, Where's My Car?", he showed a lot of comedic flair and charm in "A Lot Like Love". But the two face an uphill battle here with inane dialogue and a premise that not only is unbelievable, but unlikeable. The two are so incompatible (and immature) they can't even control bathroom time and, in Jack's case, his bladder. --"Jae-Ha Kim"

Studio: Captured Light
Genre: Documentary, Comedy, Drama
Writer: William Arntz, Betsy Chasse
Duration: 90 mins
Starring: Marlee Matlin, Elaine Hendrix, John Ross Bowie, Robert Bailey Jr., Barry Newman
Summary: "WHAT THE #$*! DO WE KNOW?!" is a radical departure from convention. It demands a freedom of view and greatness of thought so far unknown, indeed, not even dreamed of since Copernicus. It's a documentary. It's a story. It's mind-blowing special effects. This film plunges you into a world where quantum uncertainty is demonstrated - where neurological processes, and perceptual shifts are engaged and lived by its protagonist - where everything is alive, and reality is changed by every thought.
What Women Want (Lo que ellas Quieren)
Nancy Meyers
Title: What Women Want (Lo que ellas Quieren)
Studio: Paramount
Genre: Comedy
Writer: Josh Goldsmith
Duration: 126 mins
Starring: Mel Gibson, Helen Hunt, Marisa Tomei, Alan Alda, Ashley Johnson
Summary: It must've made for a great pitch meeting: Male chauvinist advertising executive gains the ability to hear the thoughts of any woman around him. Add Mel Gibson--as Nick, the divorced "man's man" who can charm almost any woman into bed--and you've got high-concept comedy made in Hollywood heaven, right? Not necessarily. The smartest thing director Nancy Meyers did with "What Women Want" is dispose of this ludicrous plot contrivance before it wears out its welcome. It's fun to see Mel react to a deafening chorus of female thoughts, but his dubious "gift"--courtesy of an accidental electro-shock in his bathtub--is a mixed blessing for the audience. The women in Nick's life conveniently think in complete sitcom-friendly sentences, and the novelty quickly wears thin.
The movie improves by focusing on the fallout of Nick's predicament. Exploiting his unfair advantage, he sabotages the career of his new boss (Helen Hunt) even as he's falling in love with her; says all the right things to the aspiring actress (Marisa Tomei) who previously spurned his advances; and uses mind reading to curry favor with his 15-year-old daughter (Ashley Johnson). This two-faced scheming isn't malicious, however, and "What Women Want" is blessed by Gibson's amiably nuanced performance. His graceful riff on Fred Astaire is a dazzling surprise, and as Nick reforms, Gibson takes major credit for whatever depth this movie achieves. After a bit of nonsense, "What Women Want" has a lot to say about male "and" female behavior, be it noble or unappealing. It's both amusing and truthful, and that's almost as fun as a glimpse into someone else's brain. "--Jeff Shannon"

When a Stranger Calls
Simon West
Title: When a Stranger Calls
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Horror
Duration: 87
Starring: Camilla Belle, Tommy Flanagan, Katie Cassidy, Tessa Thompson, Brian Geraghty
Summary: The smartest thing about the remake of "When a Stranger Calls" is that it strips the original 1979 version to its bare essentials as a primal exercise in stormy-night terror. While taking the original film's suspenseful first act and expanding it into an 87-minute cat-and-mouse game, screenwriter Jake Wade Wall adds a few clever updates involving cellphones and home-security services, as well as the maze-like menace of a lavish modern home that serves as the setting for mayhem when cute teenager Jill (Camilla Belle, in the role originated by Carol Kane) takes on a babysitting job that she may live to regret. Someone is stalking her in the big, expensive glass palace that her employers call home (a splendid set designed by Jon Gary Steele), and that creepy voice on the phone (belonging to Lance Henriksen, master of doom-laden threat) should've been her first clue to grab the pair of terrified kids she's supposed to be protecting and leave the house ASAP. But no, the script, the overwrought score, and the uninspired direction of Simon West ("Con-Air", "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider") insist that poor Jill be put through a "Halloween"-like night from hell, complete with a black cat as an omen of nasty things to come. Kudos to Wall and West for attempting to generate horror through suggestion (by keeping the homicidal stalker mostly off-screen), but let's face it: the original film is hardly a classic (its TV-movie sequel, "When a Stranger Calls Back", is considerably better), and the remake takes too long to yield minimal rewards. Maybe Jill should've just unplugged the phone. "--Jeff Shannon"
When Did You Last See Your Father?
Title: When Did You Last See Your Father?
Studio: Sony Pictures Classics
Genre: Art House & International
Duration: 92 mins
Starring: Colin Firth
Summary: An outstanding cast gives emotional richness to the father/son memoir "When Did You Last See Your Father?". Writer Blake Morrison (Colin Firth), faced with the impending death of his father Arthur (Jim Broadbent, "Iris", "Topsy-Turvy"), reflects back on how the clash of personalities has led them to near alienation. Blake can't forgive his father for small embarrassments and large betrayals--but he also can't let go of the need to understand his father's combination of broad but generous humor and petty egotism. Everyone else in Arthur's life seemed to love him; why can't Blake? The story of "When Did You Last See Your Father?" is familiar stuff (how often do we need to learn that boisterous fathers and sensitive sons can't communicate?), but Firth, Broadbent, and Juliet Stevenson ("Truly Madly Deeply"), as Blake's mother, fill in the broad outlines with warmth and nuance. Particular credit goes to newcomer Matthew Beard as Blake's teenage self; Beard vividly captures the vulnerability, yearning, and self-absorption of adolescence. "--Bret Fetzer"

White Chicks
Keenen Ivory Wayans
Title: White Chicks
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Comedy, Crime
Writer: Xavier Cook
Duration: 109 mins
Starring: Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Busy Philipps, Maitland Ward, Jaime King
Summary: Roasted by critics but surprisingly tenacious at the box office, "White Chicks" is the kind of comedy that thrives (well, maybe) on home video. Faint praise indeed, but it allows comedy fans an opportunity to cut the Wayans brothers (costars Marlon and Shawn, and director-cowriter Keenen Ivory) some slack and at least "try" to answer the obvious question, "what were they thinking?" For the sake of charity, let's ignore charges of reverse racism that plagued this would-be comedy about a pair of FBI agents (Marlon and Shawn) who go undercover as over-privileged white debutantes to thwart a kidnapping scheme, and let's allow that comedy--not social satire--is the Wayans' top priority. If you can get past the fart jokes, the freakishly unconvincing "white chick" makeup, seemingly endless gags about "white chicks" getting hit on by lusty black guys, and a plot that really doesn't matter at all, you just "might" find a laugh or two in the Wayans' attempt to understand women through a bit of friendly gender reversal. "Tootsie" it's not, but at least "White Chicks" offers more entertainment that Nicky and Paris Hilton, who partially inspired the story. Just ask yourself, which freak show do you prefer? "--Jeff Shannon"
The White Countess
James Ivory
Title: The White Countess
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Art House & International
Writer: Kazuo Ishiguro
Duration: 138 mins
Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Natasha Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave, Lynn Redgrave, Madeleine Potter
Summary: A stellar cast and an intricate script enhance this last film from the elegant producing/directing team of Merchant/Ivory (creators of "A Room with a View", "Howards End", and more). Set in 1930s Shanghai, "The White Countess" is both Sofia (Natasha Richardson, "Patty Hearst"), a fallen member of the Russian aristocracy, and a nightclub created by a blind American diplomat named Jackson (Ralph Fiennes, "The English Patient"), who asks Sofia to be the centerpiece of the world he wants to create. Sofia accepts to escape a life of prostitution, but Jackson's world proves both fragile and volatile--as does Shanghai itself, on the verge of an invasion from Japan. The script, by novelist Kazuo Ishiguro ("The Remains of the Day"), is fundamentally about culture--what it is, how it's formed, how it shapes and is shaped by human desires--but to describe it thus makes the movie sound academic. Instead, it's lush and subtle, fluid in how it weaves together two people deeply wounded by past losses, who gradually come to embrace what the immediate moment has to offer. Fiennes and Richardson are the movie's core, but surrounding them is a stunning supporting cast that includes Vanessa Redgrave ("Mrs. Dalloway", "Julia"), Lynn Redgrave ("Shine"), Allan Corduner ("Topsy-Turvy"), and Hiroyuki Sanada ("Ringu"). Wild Hogs
Walt Becker
Title: Wild Hogs
Studio: Buena Vista Home Entertainment / Touchstone
Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy
Duration: 100 mins
Starring: Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, William H. Macy, Ray Liotta
Summary: A coming-of-age story starring a bunch of fiftysomething stars rather than teenage actors, "Wild Hogs" is a well-intentioned comedy starring John Travolta (Woody), Tim Allen (Doug), Martin Lawrence (Bobby), and William H. Macy (Dudley) as a group of Midwesterners facing their own versions of mid-life crises. They decide to escape their frazzled personal lives and rejuvenate themselves by taking a road trip on their slick hogs. But their journey is less "Easy Rider" than it is "Three Amigos" (plus one). As individual actors, each lead is a formidable star. But throw them all together into one crammed screenplay full of scatological humor and uncomfortable homosexual gags and it doesn't quite work. The actors spend so much time trying to outdo each other on screen that they aren't believable as friends, much less comrades. Walt Becker ("National Lampoon"'s Van Wilder) offers minimal direction on a film that could've used some reining in, especially during scenes between Macy and Marisa Tomei (as a diner owner who inexplicably falls for him). There are promises of some interesting vignettes when Ray Liotta shows up as Jack, the leader of a real motorcycle gang. When Jack threatens to break Dudley's legs, Dudley counters, "I'm a computer programmer! I don't need my legs." Without missing a beat, Jack says, "Fine, we'll break his hands." It's not that the lines are so funny, but they way Liotta delivers them that adds some life to this flailing comedy. Unfortunately, his scenes with the rest of the cast are all too few. Summary: In this darkly karmic vision of Arizona, a man who breathes nothing but ill will begins a noxious domino effect as quickly as an uncontrollable virus kills. As he exits Arizona State Penn after twenty-one long years, Wilson has only one thing on the brain, leveling the score with career criminal, Mackey Willis. As eccentric and intuitive as he is vicious, Mackey's own perfected criminal game will play right into the path Wilson has set for him. With the help of a prison bus driver, Lee Marvin, Wilson acts as a catalyst, putting a plan into action that will bring an untimely end to Mackey Willis. The problem is, no plan is perfect. Meanwhile, an aimless bunch of Arizona twenty-nothings are cooking up a heist that will lead them to the same bank, with different intentions. Skilled at nothing beyond drinking, doing drugs and attending strip clubs, their plan is destined for immediate failure. Heavily armed, without a single identifiable clue, these boys are as blind as they are impulsive. With both plans loosely angled inward, the vengefully mystical presence of the Sonoran landscape will have its way and every solider will fall on his own sword.
Wild Things
John McNaughton
Title: Wild Things
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Drama
Writer: Stephen Peters
Duration: 108 mins
Starring: Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon, Neve Campbell, Theresa Russell, Denise Richards
Summary: "Wild Things" is the kind of lurid, trashy thriller that you'll either dive into with unabashed pleasure or turn away from in prudish disgust; it's entirely your choice, but we suggest the former option since it's obviously much more fun. The plot's so convoluted it's hardly worth describing, except to say that it's set in humid Florida and involves a respected high school teacher (Matt Dillon--yes, Matt Dillon as a teacher!) who is faced with accusations of rape by a student (Denise Richards, from "Starship Troopers") who had been giving him the kind of attention most people would consider improper for such a "nice" young lady. Another student (Neve Campbell) raises a similar charge against the teacher, and that's when a police officer (Kevin Bacon) begins to investigate the allegations. Just when you think the movie's gone overboard with its shameless sex and absurdly twisted plot, in drops Bill Murray as an unscrupulous lawyer (of course) to spice things up with insurance scams and welcomed comic relief. As directed by John McNaughton (who has a way of making just the right moves with this kind of film noir melodrama), "Wild Things" is a bona fide guilty pleasure--the kind of movie you may be ashamed to enjoy, but what the heck, you'll enjoy it anyway. Willard
Glen Morgan, Julie Ng
Title: Willard
Studio: New Line Home Entertainment
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Horror
Writer: Gilbert Ralston
Duration: 100 mins
Starring: Crispin Glover, R. Lee Ermey, Laura Harring, Jackie Burroughs, Kim McKamy
Summary: As accomplished as it is superfluous, "Willard" is a stylish horror film with plenty of style and precious little horror. Genre buffs will appreciate it as a visually superior sequel/remake of its popular 1971 predecessor, giving Crispin Glover a title role perfectly suited to his uniquely odd persona, in the same league as "Psycho"'s Norman Bates. This time, Willard's the psychotically lonely son of the original film's now-deceased protagonist; a milquetoast introvert who befriends an army of obedient rats--lethal allies when Willard's pushed to his emotional breaking point by his abusive boss (R. Lee Ermey). In keeping with his memorably macabre episodes of "X-Files", writer-director Glen Morgan excels with dreary atmosphere and mischievously morbid humor (including an ill-fated cat named Scully), and Glover gives his best performance since "River's Edge". But even the furry villain Ben--an oversized rat with attitude--is more funny than frightful... so really, what's the point? With some justification, Glover's fans will appreciate the open door to a sequel. "--Jeff Shannon"

Winter Passing
Adam Rapp
Title: Winter Passing
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Genre: Drama
Writer: Adam Rapp
Duration: 98 mins
Starring: Ed Harris, Zooey Deschanel, Will Ferrell, Darrell Larson, John Bedford Lloyd
Summary: Reese (Zooey Deschanel, "All the Real Girls") is a brusk barmaid/actress, toiling away in the East Village fringe circuit. Her father is reclusive J.D. Salinger-like author Don Holdin (Ed Harris, "A History of Violence"). Reese hasn't seen him for years. One night after a performance, an editor from a major publishing house (Amy Madigan, "Carnivàle"), offers $100,000 for the letters he and her late mother exchanged during their courtship. Reese turns her down flat. Eventually, she changes her mind and takes off for rural Michigan to retrieve them. She finds the disheveled, hard-drinking Don living with former student Shelly (Amelia Warner, "Quills") and ex-Christian rocker Corbit (a disarmingly straight-faced Will Ferrell). It's a bizarre, if functional arrangement: Shelly cooks the meals, while Corbit serves as security guard. All try to make nice, but the coke-snorting, insult-flinging Reese won't have any of it. She just wants to find the letters and go. This turns out to be trickier than expected, especially once she actually sits down to read them. Directed by and adapted from his two-act play, Adam Rapp's "Winter Passing" is the kind of well-intentioned independent where longstanding family issues are solved in just a few days (to the gentle strains of Cat Power and the Shins). Nonetheless, it offers the unique opportunity to see Deschanel and Ferrell, "Elf"'s charmingly mis-matched couple, cast against type. As expected, Harris provides solid support, while Warner's clear-eyed Shelly is the true heart of the story. "--Kathleen C. Fennessy"

Witless Protection
Title: Witless Protection
Studio: Lions Gate
Genre: Comedy
Duration: 97 mins
Starring: Larry the Cable Guy
Summary: It's official; Larry the Cable Guy is the new Ernest, and critics be damned. You want smart and sophisticated? Buy "The Noel Coward Collection". Larry's a populist from the "I'd rather keep my fans happy" school, and his loyal following will be ecstatic with this film's broad slapstick, what one initially offended character calls "feeble, juvenile, and bigoted" humor, and gross-out bodily function gags (nude body-cavity search, anyone?). Larry portrays a small-town deputy with dreams of becoming an FBI special agent. "I know a criminal when I see one, a rat when I smell one, and a bad moon when it rises," he drawls. When he spies a woman (Ivana Milicevic) in the company of sinister-looking, "Men in Black" types, he rescues the "damsel in dee-stress." However, she is a government-protected witness en route to Chicago to testify in a sensational trial of Enron proportions. "Are you insane?" she asks him. "No," he replies, "I'm Larry." The film gets plenty of mileage out of their odd coupleness. Her cell-phone ringtone is classical music; his is the theme from "Green Acres". She eats salads; he gorges himself on sausage. She's a liberal (who gets off an "impeach Bush" joke) and he bleeds U.S. Red (at one point, the action pauses for a small-town "Support Our Troops" parade).
"Witless Protection" also benefits from some oddball casting. Yaphet Kotto costars as FBI Agent Alonzo Mosely (the name of his character in the classic "Midnight Run"). Peter Stormare, the silent, creepy kidnapper in "Fargo", portrays a corrupt businessman with an unaccountable British accent. In a baffling cameo, Joe Mantegna seems to be channeling Strother Martin, while Jenny McCarthy serves up some sass as Larry's waitress girlfriend, nuff said, and a game Eric Roberts is a goon who butts heads with Larry in an epic fight scene. Some jokes are stale (Larry dredges up Regis Philbin's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" catch-phrase), while others are current enough to reference Michael Vick and Angelina Jolie. It is a sign of artistic growth that Larry does not utter his own signature catch-phrase, so we won't either. "Witless Protection" was released theatrically during Oscar weekend, when Hollywood celebrates supreme achievement in film. This is what is known in the business as counter-programming. Greg Mclean
Title: Wolf Creek
Studio: Weinstein Company
Genre: Adventure, Crime, Horror, Thriller
Writer: Greg Mclean
Duration: 99 mins
Starring: Nathan Phillips, Cassandra Magrath, Kestie Morassi, John Jarratt, Gordon Poole
Summary: "Wolf Creek", written and directed by Greg McClean, is the "Blair Witch Project" of the Australian outback. Capitalizing on the human fear of becoming lost in the wilderness, in this case a desert crater called Wolf Creek National Park, this graphic horror film exploits the handheld camera to capture the grotesque actions of Mick Taylor (John Janatt), a sadistic serial killer. When a hip twenty-something guy, Ben Mitchell (Nathan Phillips), and two hippie-ish girls, Cassandra (Liz Hunter) and Kristy (Kestie Morassi), take a road trip and their car breaks down, they have no choice but to accept help from Mick, an eccentric rural Aussie, who, like a spider, tows them into his nightmarish lair. Mick hunts kangaroos and hates tourists, translating his fetish for knives, shotguns, and other torture devices into a need to kill humans as if they're vermin infesting his majestic landscape. Ample blood and gore leave the viewer feeling nearly as sick as the girls who are forced to watch each other die. Like Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs", Mick Taylor is a savvy, calculating killer, despicable but psychologically fascinating. "--Trinie Dalton"

The Women
Title: The Women
Studio: New Line Home Video
Genre: Comedy
Duration: 115 mins
Starring: Meg Ryan, Eva Mendes, Annette Bening, Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett-Smith
Summary: For fans of some of America's finest actresses, seeing a film with even one of the cast members of "The Women" would be a treat. But this remake of George Cukor's famed girl-trouble ensemble film features Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Jada Pinkett Smith, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Cloris Leachman, Bette Midler, Carrie Fisher, Joanna Gleason, and Candice Bergen--whew!--making it a film that fans of these terrifically talented women can savor. The remake may not have the cat-itude or camp factor of the original, but so what? The cast's chemistry really shines; friendship is thicker than water, it turns out--even stronger than the ties that bind women to their men. Ryan is the good-girl Mary Haines, whose husband, she and her friends learn, is cheating on her with the stunning femme fatale Crystal (Mendes, in the Joan Crawford role)--"a spritzer" at the perfume counter. "Quelle horreur!" The other women rally around the hapless Mary, staging interventions, offering snappy advice, and plotting battles on behalf of their friend. But it turns out that Ryan's Mary isn't quite as fragile as she seems. Gimlets and girl talk--lots of both--go a long way toward getting our heroine through her crisis, and onto a new stage in her life that surprises her husband and more than one of her pals. And the laughs by the appearances of Midler and Bergen, especially, are worth watching the whole film for. --"A.T. Hurley"
The Woodsman
Nicole Kassell
Title: The Woodsman
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Drama
Writer: Steven Fechter
Duration: 87 mins
Starring: Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Mos Def, David Alan Grier, Eve
Summary: Kevin Bacon gives one of the best, most nuanced performances of his career in "The Woodsman", a daring and thought-provoking drama he co-produced with his wife, Kyra Sedgwick. In portraying a convicted pedophile named Walter, recently released from prison and struggling to rebuild his life, Bacon and writer-director Nicole Kassell (making her feature-film debut) do a remarkable job of exploring all facets of this troubling yet very human character, from his continuing criminal impulses to the despair he feels over having to conceal his horrible past. Sedgwick costars as the one woman who appears willing to accept Walter, secrets and all, and while "The Woodsman" takes a few regrettable shortcuts in illustrating Walter's quest for the good man he can be, the film deserves to be seen and discussed as a provocative yet admirably humane study of an individual whom society may too quickly label a "monster." The film allows for different interpretations, and that complexity--along with Bacon's performance--makes it worthy of a wide and hopefully understanding audience. "--Jeff Shannon"
The Work and the Glory - American Zion

Title: The Work and the Glory - American Zion
Studio: Vineyard Productions
Genre: Drama
Writer: Gerald N. Lund, Matt Whitaker
Duration: 99 mins
Starring: Sam Hennings, Brenda Strong, Eric Johnson, Alexander Carroll, Brighton Hertford
Summary: In November of 1833, the state of Missouri turned a blind eye as hundreds of its peaceful inhabitants were hunted down and driven from their homes in the dead of night. Against this impending strife, a young man with a divine vision leads a people against the aggression of an anti-hero with a vulnerable past. With more than two million copies sold, the second volume of Gerald N. Lund's epic series The Work and the Glory now brings a pivotal moment in American history to the big screen. "The Work and The Glory: American Zion" sets the story of the fictional Steed family against the historically factual backdrop of the Mormon people's move into the West. Divided by their diverse reactions to a nascent ideology, the Steeds struggle to hold together as the strength of their convictions and their filial bonds are tested. The stirring narrative of the faith that led a persecuted people to Missouri and beyond is one of the most poignant untold tales of American history. It is the account of a valiant struggle to exercise the rights promised by a fledgling nation. "The Work and the Glory: American Zion" unearths the story of the passion behind the movement which eventually launched the largest American migration and the colonization of the West: the vision of a promised land in America.

World Trade Center
Oliver Stone
Title: World Trade Center
Studio: Paramount
Genre: Action & Adventure
Duration: 128 mins
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Maria Bello, Connor Paolo, Anthony Piccininni, Alexa Gerasimovich
Summary: Regardless of whether it was "too early" in 2006 to dramatize the events of September 11th, 2001, "World Trade Center" succeeds as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who served at "ground zero" in the wake of terrorist attacks on the WTC's twin towers in New York City. Removed from the politics of war and terrorism (yet still, like all films, inherently political in expressing its point of view), Oliver Stone's potent drama focuses on the nightmarish ordeal, and subsequent rescue, of Port Authority policemen John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Peña), who were buried deeply within the rubble of the WTC after the twin towers collapsed. Granted, it's only the film's historical context that distinguishes it from any other dramatic rescue story, but in focusing on the goodness of humanity in response to the evil of terrorists who remain unnamed and off-screen, Stone and first-time screenwriter Andrea Berloff create an emotional context as powerful as anything Stone has directed since "Platoon". Even as he resorts to some questionable tactics typically lacking in subtlety, Stone refrains from much of the blunt-force filmmaking that has made him a critical punching bag, rising to this challenging occasion with a heartfelt and deeply American portrait of unity – personal, familial, and national. Flaws and all, "World Trade Center" serves an honorable purpose, reminding us all that for those fleeting days in September 2001, America showed its best face to a sympathetic world. --"Jeff Shannon"
The World's Fastest Indian
Roger Donaldson
Title: The World's Fastest Indian
Studio: Magnolia
Genre: Adventure, Biography, Drama, Sport
Writer: Roger Donaldson
Duration: 127 mins
Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Diane Ladd, Iain Rea, Tessa Mitchell, Aaron Murphy
Summary: A movie that exudes affection and goodwill, "The World's Fastest Indian" is an unabashed mash note to a lovely character from New Zealand's recent past. Burt Munro, played by Anthony Hopkins, is a cantankerous Kiwi with an obsession: he's been tinkering with his 1920s-era Indian brand motorcycle for years, pushing it to ever-faster speeds. It's the 1960s, and Burt has the utterly mad idea of taking the bike to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, site of world records for speed racing. The movie takes a while to get to the journey--and then the journey takes a while--but the genial atmosphere prevails. (People of a certain age, for whom the word "Bonneville" evokes pleasant associations with hotrods and world-speed records, will not be disappointed in the film's location shooting, or its sense of awe.) Hopkins is not quite on-the-money casting for the jovial, happy-go-lucky Munro, and his accent wavers, but he nails the emotional scenes and the fascination with speed. Smaller bits are well-filled by Diane Ladd and Christopher Lawford (son of Peter), who looks uncannily of the era. New Zealand director Roger Donaldson doesn't take any chances here, but the story clearly means something to him, and that sense of commitment carries the film through its sleepier moments.
